“Olde New England-1”, gives the reader an in-depth overview of
pre-Colonial and early Colonial life and death in New England. The periods
covered examine the presence of Europeans in North America
from evidence of archaeological and medical evidence. There is also an
investigation of Viking routes into the area based on DNA analysis of bones
and the Colonial wars with the indigenous peoples.
Featured is the work of Roger
Williams who mixed with the local tribes and studied their customs and
languages. His personal observations of indigenous North American language
and culture also his translation of their language (The first in north
America)allows us an eyewitness view of
Indian life in colonial America.
We look at the tragedy of the
Witch trials, fueled by secular bigotry expounded by the Reverend Cotton
Mather. It contains transcripts of official summons against those unfortunate
'victims' It is hoped this book may by looking in some dark areas shed more
light on a tragic era.
The book also concentrates on
other contemporary accounts of local native wars particularly of the
Narragansetts, The Pequot War and the Sack of Deerfield.
A contemporary, harrowing account of an Indian captive is given in much
depth by Mary Rowlanson who witnessed first hand her ordeal.
